The key to moving on from the pain and loss is awareness and understanding

  Begin Your Journey

Your experience is unique.

No one can tell you how you ought to feel.

Your journey is deeply personal.

Impacts from abortion can be many and varied, both short or long term and being aware of how you may be affected can help.

View a You Tube clip Little Buttons  - a short documentary that explores an untold side of abortion; the grieving process. It follows the stories of three brave women as they share their own experiences and the personal journeys they they each took toward healing.

Effects may be immediate or sometimes effects of an abortion or termination only surface later down the track. For some women when memories surface it can feel like it just happened yesterday. The feelings are very real. Some common reactions include:

  • Depression, suicidal impulses
  • Loss and grief
  • Regret or guilt
  • Anxiety, panic attacks
  • Emotional numbness or withdrawal
  • Nightmares, flashbacks
  • On edge, jumpy
  • Increased irritability or anger
  • Animosity to those involved
  • Desire for secrecy about the abortion
  • Physical symptoms e.g. abdominal pain, headaches...
  • Relationship problems especially re trust, sex and intimacy
  • Drug &/or alcohol misuse or self-destructive behaviours
  • Repeat abortions

Where aspects were issues prior to the abortion/termination they might become worse afterwards.
